In older children and adults, accidents such as falling on an outstretched hand or on the shoulder is a common cause of clavicle fractures. These fractures are also sometimes the result of a blow from a blunt object or a collision of some sort.

How long do you have to wear a sling for a broken collarbone?
A patient with a broken collar bone should wear a simple arm sling for about 6 weeks. Children with clavicle fractures are often equipped with a figure-8 clavicle strap to keep them moving the clavicle until cured, usually within 3 to 4 weeks. Most adult fractures treated with figure-8 splint or strap and will have to sleep in a chair or in bed with extra pillows because the fracture takes one or two weeks to set up and is very important to prevent rolling to the bone during sleep. Usually the patient will be able to start exercising their shoulder after three weeks of immobilization.
Healing is considered complete when there is no motion at the fracture site and x-ray revealed complete bone union.
How severe if the clavicle fracture? Would that collarbone fracture to acromioclavicular joint separation?
Injuries are less common acromoclavicular joint separation, or AC, where the clavicle meets the acromion process of the scapula. It is a bony prominence at the top of the shoulder. Joint ligaments can be injured by falling into the elbow, shoulder or an outstretched arm. Symptoms can range in severity from mild pain to a complete rupture resulting bump joint where the collarbone sticks out of the neck.
Symptoms include pain and tenderness end of the clavicle, and pain when moving the shoulder joint, especially when raising the arm above the shoulder.
If the injury is minor partial separation, it can be treated with ice packs and rest. However, a more serious separation may need to be attached to in order to heal. A complete separation would require orthopedic surgery. AC joint injuries should be evaluated by a doctor, if the injury is ignored and allowed to heal out of place it will increase wear and tear on the shoulder joint caused the problem in the future.
