The shape of the human pelvis resembles a ring at the base of the spine, which is between the back and legs. This area is an important part because the main nerves, reproductive organs, bladder and intestines are located close together and are simultaneously protected by the pelvic bones. This bone is also the axis of the muscles in the thighs, abdomen and hips.
Hip Fracture Causes
There are a variety of causes for hip fractures, including harsh impacts in traffic accidents or injuries from falling from a height, as well as minor impacts such as falling at home, especially in patients with osteoporosis.
This condition is always characterized by pain. This pain is especially felt when making certain movements, such as when trying to walk or move the hips. Pelvic fractures generally have difficulty performing various movements, including walking. Fractures can also be indicated by bruising and swelling in the hip area.
In some cases, fractures result in bleeding from the anus, urethra, or vagina, the presence of a hematoma (bleeding under the surface of the skin), nerve disorders, and blood vessels in one or both legs.
Hip Fracture Treatments
Most people will need surgery to fix the fracture or replace all or part of their hip, ideally on the same day they’re admitted to hospital, or the day after.
There are different operations, which are described below. The type of surgery you have will depend on: the type of fracture you have – where in the thigh bone (femur) the fracture is, your age, how physically mobile you were before the hip fracture, your mental ability to take part in the post-surgery rehabilitation programme, the condition of the bone and joint – for example, whether or not you have arthritis.
Type of Hip Fracture treatments surgery
Internal fixation is when pins, screws, rods or plates are used to hold the bone in place while it heals.
Hemiarthroplasty is when the femoral head is replaced with a prosthesis (false part). The femoral head is the rounded top part of the thigh bone (femur) that sits in the hip socket.
Total Hip Replacement
Total Hip Replacement is to replace both the socket in the hip and the rounded top part of the thigh bone (femoral head) with a prosthesis (false part).
