Scheuermann’s disease is a condition characterized by pain in the back and a hump on the back (kyphosis).
Kyphosis is a deformity of the spine that can result from trauma, developmental disorders or degenerative diseases. Kyphosis in adolescence also called Scheuermann’s disease.
Cause of Kyphosis
The cause of Scheuermann’s disease is unknown. This disease appears in adolescence and more common in boys.
Symptoms of Kyphosis
Symptoms includes:
- Persistent back pain but its light weight
- Fatigue
- Pain when pressed and stiffness in the spine
- Back looks curved
- Curved upper spine greater than normal.
Diagnosis of Kyphosis
Diagnosis is based on symptoms and physical examination (abnormal curvature of the spine). Also examined neurological (nerve) to detect weakness or changes in sensation).
Spine x-rays performed to determine the severity of the curvature of the spine.
Treatment for Kyphosis
Cases are mild and non-progressive can be overcome with the weight loss (so the reduced strain on your back) and avoid strenuous activity.
If the case is more severe, sometimes used brace (support) of the spine or the patient bed with bedding stiff / hard.
If the situation worsens, surgery may be needed to correct abnormalities of the spine.
