Seizures are symptoms that arise from the direct or indirect effects of central nervous system (CNS) disease or brain dysfunction. Such brain dysfunction can be accompanied by motor, sensory and autonomic disorders depending on the area of the brain involved either the organ itself or its spread to other organs.
Seizure symptoms depend on the part of the brain affected and the type of seizure. However, the most common type is tonic clonic seizures, in which there are two stages: the tonic or rigid stage followed by the clonic stage. In this type of attack patients can only experience the tonic or clonic stage only. This type of attack is usually preceded by an aura.
Seizures can be caused by various conditions namely, epilepsy, febrile convulsions, hypoglycemia, hypoxia, hypotension, brain tumors, meningitis, electrolyte imbalance, and drug overdose.
Apart from the symptoms, the diagnosis can be made through EEG (Electroencephalogram) and blood tests, especially electrolytes, then if there is a time or suspicion of infection, MRI examination can be done either with contrast or non-contrast and examination of cerebrospinal fluid.
How to prevent seizures specifically depends on the originator of each. But generally prevention can be done by avoiding flickering light, excessive stress or physical fatigue.
Seizures treatments include anti-epileptic drug (AED) therapy with four goals, namely: eliminate seizures or reduce their frequency to the maximum possible level, avoid side effects associated with long-term treatment, and assist patients in maintaining or restoring their psychosocial activities, and in maintaining the stability of their daily lives.
